We are Polyamorus! Now what?
When people come to Ravenwolfe Health & Wellness Clinic curious about ethical non-monogamy (ENM), one of the first things I tell them is, “you’re not alone, and you’re not wrong for wanting love that looks different than the standard model.”
As a therapist who works closely with clients exploring non-traditional or non-monogamous (ENM) relationship structures, I’ve seen how powerful, and complex, this journey can be. ENM can offer freedom, authentic connection, and acceptance, but it also faces deeper challenges that most of us were never taught how to navigate in a traditional relationship that are critical to the vitality of an ENM relationship. That’s where therapists like myself come in! We help people learn how to turn survive into thrive, and help others learn how to do the work that can make the complexity of ENM into a successful relationship that is rewarding and fulfilling.
ENM Isn’t a “Quick Fix”—It’s a Conscious Choice
Often, some of the first things I am asked as people are exploring or curious about ENM are things like, "Is something wrong with me for not wanting monogamy?" "Why am I feeling jealous if I chose this?" "How do I even begin to talk about this with my partner?" These are normal questions. Ethical non-monogamy invites us to not only unlearn deeply ingrained beliefs about ownership, love, jealousy, and self-worth, but to embrace feeling and emotional competency in ways that our parents and grandparents never really learned. You’re not just opening your relationship(s), you’re opening yourself to vulnerability, truth, and expansion. Growth often comes with challenges, and I never want a client to think that the world of ENM is all sparkling stars and roses, but the work we do in therapy to grow through these challenges is so vital and universal, that it can be applied to anything in our lives. Some of the things we explore in our sessions are:
What kind of relationship that is desired, rather than what they were taught to want
How to understand, set, engage in, and communicate clear boundaries and limitations within relationships
The importance of a relationship agreements, how to create, communicate, and makes changes to a relationship agreement that is helpful but allows everyone to have fun
How to manage emotional triggers like jealousy, fear of abandonment, or comparison
How to heal attachment wounds that might resurface when navigating multiple loves
Therapy Isn’t About Fixing You—It’s About Supporting You
One of the most beautiful aspects of my work at the clinic is helping people understand that ENM isn’t about being “more evolved” or “less attached,” it’s about being honest. Honesty can stir things up, resurfacing new or old feelings of grief, anger, invisibility, betrayal, and more. Sometimes it's old traumas that we didn’t expect to remember that to the surface, traumas we thought we healed, or traumas we didn’t know we had.
With support, you don’t have to suppress those feelings, or be ruled by them. When you work with a therapist that understands the nuances and is supportive of this lifestyle choice, you will work to explore where these feelings and issues come from, what they’re trying to teach you, and how to move through them with compassion and clarity.
