Hypnosis or Hype?

The stage is ready, a thousand eyes all looking at the person sitting on a chair, eyes closed, head lolling off to the side appearing asleep as the hypnotist walks around whispering instructions. The hypnotist snaps, and the person in the chair jumps up and starts to cluck like a chicken. The hypnotists snaps their fingers, then the person leaps to the floor and starts to bark like a dog.

Let’s clear something up right away, hypnotherapy is not what stage shows and movies have led us to believe. No one is swinging a pocket watch. No one is barking like a dog. And you will absolutely not wake up wondering why you suddenly texted your ex.

What does happen is something much more grounded—and surprisingly comforting.

Hypnotherapy is simply a focused, relaxed state of awareness where your mind gets a break from overthinking… and your nervous system finally exhales. You know that feeling right before you fall asleep, or when you’ve driven somewhere and don’t remember every turn? That’s the neighborhood hypnotherapy lives in.

So… Am I Asleep?

Nope. You’re awake. Aware. And very much in control.

In fact, hypnotherapy works because you’re participating. Think of it less like being “put under” and more like giving your brain permission to stop micromanaging everything for five minutes.

A Very Real, Very Playful Hypnotherapy FAQ

❓ Will you make me do something embarrassing?
Absolutely not. This is therapy, not a talent show. You won’t cluck, confess secrets, or suddenly think interpretive dance is a good idea unless all of these things are your goal.

❓ Can I get “stuck” in hypnosis?
Nope. If that were possible, we’d have a waiting room full of very relaxed people who forgot to leave. You naturally come in and out of hypnosis every day, bet you didn't know that, your brain knows the exit.

❓ What if I fall asleep?
Totally fine. Some people drift, some don’t. Either way, your subconscious is still listening. It’s very good at multitasking, it's pretty amazing like that.

❓ What if my mind won’t shut up?
That’s okay too, busy minds are welcome here. Hypnotherapy doesn’t require a blank mind, or even a "relaxed" mind, just a willingness to let thoughts pass without chasing them. As a matter of fact, a lot of ADHD clients find that hypnotherapy helps to slow down the inner dialogue, and get their brain to focus thoughts in a linear easier way.

❓ Can hypnosis make me do things against my values?
No. Your ethics, boundaries, and free will don’t disappear. Hypnosis doesn’t override who you are, it works with you. Even if it could, our hypnotherapists are vetted and tested; this means we only have team members that value your free will and your own personal autonomy. Crazy concept huh!

❓ Do I have to believe in it for it to work?
Not really. Skeptics do just fine. You don’t need blind belief, just mild curiosity and a willingness to try something different. As a matter of fact, when I first went to school to be a hypnotherapist, I was so skeptial I went in trying to prove that it was all a hoax. Of course I fell in love, and here we are bonded together till death us do part.

❓ How will I feel afterward?
Most clients report feeling calmer, clearer, lighter, or pleasantly grounded, like your nervous system finally took a deep breath. Others have felt like they were ready for a nap. Everyone responds a little differently. This is why we recommend never driving during hypnosis, always having someone to ride with you in case your sleepy afterwards or having someone at home that can help care for you after a telehealth session until you know how your body will react.

Why People Try Hypnotherapy, Usually After Trying Everything Else

Most clients don’t walk in saying, “I’d like hypnosis, please.” They come in saying things like:

Hypnotherapy is especially helpful when insight alone hasn’t fixed the problem. Because knowing why something happens doesn’t always stop it from happening.

What Hypnotherapy Helps With

In everyday-human terms, hypnotherapy can support a wide variety of things like:

Hypnotherapy is testing new limits everyday, although hypnosis has been around for a long time and helped so many, hypnosis can't make claims of helping because science does require that something be validated through repetitive results before it can advertise that it works. This is a double edged sword. It is a great concept because then clients know what to expect and know how something should work. On the other hand, there are clients that have seen real results using hypnosis, but because it couldn't be scientifically reproduced in another person it gets dismissed. So, if your curious to see if hypnotherapy can do something that isn't advertised, ask your hypnotherapist if they have studies showing results in that particular area and then as you do your own research you can draw your own conclusions if you would like to try hypnosis.
